Deathly Hallows Release Date

Is 7/7/07 the big day? According to the New York Times, "Harry Potter fans aching for the next, and final, volume of the young wizard’s story got some relief when the author, J. K. Rowling, disclosed the title, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” this month. But they are still on tenterhooks about exactly when the new book will arrive.

While there is no official publication date yet for the final book, industry watchers say it is widely expected to be released next year. Speculation in much of the Harry Potter fan base has focused on July 7, 2007, the seventh day of the seventh month of 2007 — a propitious date to introduce the seventh book in the series.

After Ms. Rowling announced the title on her Web site on Dec. 21, the independent fan site MuggleNet posted a point-by-point analysis of possible release dates. Fans who subscribe to the 07/07/07 theory point out that the numerical tag would not only be a catchy marketing trick, but also that July 7 this year falls on a Saturday, the same day of the week that the last three Potter books have been released. (Also, the villainous Lord Voldemort has a seven-part soul.)

The Harry Potter series has been a publishing phenomenon, with 300 million copies of the first six books in print, four films in release (a fifth is set for release next July) and a sizable fortune made each year in related merchandise. But the more pressing question for the publishing industry is whether the books will become perennial classic like “Charlotte’s Web” or the “Little House on the Prairie” series.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

So now we know that J.K. Rowling's next book will be titled "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." The question presents itself: what does this phrase mean exactly? And, perhaps more to the point, what will it mean for Harry? Let the speculation begin.

We can start by simply pointing out what the words mean. Hallow is a verb meaning "to make holy, to sanctify, or consecrate." It can mean "to honor as holy, to venerate." In the context of "deathly hallows" we can only imagine how J.K. Rowling intends the first word to modify the second. It has struck many fans as a dark and foreboding title. Only time will tell what its true meaning is. We'll all have to wait patiently for the final book. Tell me what you think in comments!

Harry Potter New Book?

In December of 2005, Rowling declared on her web site that "2006 will be the year when I write the final book in the Harry Potter series." Updates have since followed in her online diary chronicling the progress of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, though proclamation of completion and release date have not accompanied them. Many fans speculate that the book will be published in 2007, with a particular fixation on the numerologically-significant July 7, 2007, but as of December 6, 2006 there had been no confirmation of a release date from either Rowling or her publishers.

Rowling herself has stated that the last chapter of the seventh book was completed some time ago, before writing the third book. According to her, the last word in the book is "scar".
Rowling also confirmed during an interview with the Associated Press August 14, 2006 that Hermione would indeed become "more than a friend" to pal Ron Weasley, but not before a brief fling with Neville Longbottom. Rumours of a possible love triangle have yet to be confirmed.
In June 2006, Rowling, on an appearance on the British talk show Richard & Judy, announced that the chapter had been modified as one character "got a reprieve" and two others who previously survived the story had in fact been killed. She also said she could see the logic in killing off Harry in order to stop other writers from writing books about Harry's life after Hogwarts.

Regarding the existence of Harry Potter novels beyond the seventh, Rowling has said that she might write an eighth book some day, but it will not continue the life of Harry and his friends. If she does, she intends it to be a sort of encyclopedia of the wizarding world, containing concepts and snippets of information that were not relevant enough to the novels' plots to be included in them. She has also said that she will not write any sort of prequel to the novels, since by the time the series ends all the necessary back story will have been revealed.
